Termite Treatment with Termidor
The last few years have seen the most exciting development in the treatment of termites since the introduction of chlordane. Non-repellant liquid termiticides incorporate the direct precision of liquid application, while avoiding the pitfalls of repellant barrier treatments.
Non-repellant liquids, such as Termidor, are applied around and under a home using similar tools as those used for conventional barrier treatments. Unlike barrier treatments, however, the system does not rely on repellency. Rather, Termidor is "invisible" to termites. They freely forage through it and distribute it throughout the rest of the colony as they are feeding, grooming, and interacting with each other.
Most old-fashioned termiticides are repellents. That means that just before termites actually come in contact with the termiticides, they may "get a whiff" of the product and avoid it. As a result, their 'killing power' is less dramatic.
How Termidor works
Since termites can't detect Termidor, they forage freely through treated areas. They then spread termidor to other colony members through a phenomenon called trophallaxis, which is the process by which social insects transfer nutrients, chemical messengers, and other substances between colony members.
As a result, Termidor can eliminate entire colonies of termites, even if only a percentage of the colony members actually come into contact with the treated areas. |

| Termidor is also a responsible, low-dosage product. Unlike many other termiticides, Termidor is effective at very low application rates. The usual rate is just 0.06% of the active ingredient, Fipronil. That's a lot lower than old-fashioned termiticides. |

Advantages to Termidor:
-
Termidor has seen remarkable success both in experimental and real-world usage. For seven years (and counting), the USDA Forest Service has been conducting ground board and concrete slab trials in four states. At every application rate and at every single test location, Termidor has proven 100% effective. That's a pretty impressive record -- and one few other termiticides can match.
-
Termidor requires very little active ingredient, and is therefore considered more environmentally friendly than older repellent-type termiticides.
-
Although applied similarly to older, barrier-type termiticides, an uninterrupted barrier is not always necessary when using Termidor. This allows technicians to use more discretion when deciding, for example, whether it is really necessary to drill holes through a marble floor.
-
Termidor works much more quickly than baiting systems, and provides continuing protection even after the present termite colony is eliminated. (For a comparison between Termidor and baiting systems, please click here.)
