Ants or Termites?

To the untrained eye, ants and termites can look quite similar. But there actually are some very clearly distinguishable differences between them. Professional exterminators look for these differences to quickly tell them apart -- and so can you.

The most easily visible difference between ants and termites is that the termite's body is cigar-shaped, while the ant's body has a pinched "waist" called a pedicel, which gives it an hourglass-shaped figure.

Termites also have straight antennae, as compared to the ants' sharply elbowed antennae.

Finally, a termite's four wings are all the same length, whereas ants have longer forewings than hind wings.
